Your Android and iPhone will use an IP address to surf the internet, and for privacy while you surf, you need to hide your IP. There are a number of ways to mask your IP address on Android and iPhone. I’ll list them below, but first, here’s short review of what masking your IP address can do.
Unblock Banned Websites Bypass Firewalls Hide Your Real IP Get an IP From Another Country Give Your An Anonymous Identity Protect You From Hacks And Eavesdropping Secure your Private Data Make Your Online Activity Private

That’s a lot of stuff. Essentially it’s all related to IP address. Even the stuff about bypassing firewalls and unblocking websites is about your IP address because once you’ve got an IP from a different network, your local network restrictions no longer apply.
So ‘masking’ your IP address could be done with a proxy or with a VPN. It depends on what you want to do. In my book, proxies can be divided into two categories. There are tons of types of proxies, but not all are applicable to our situation here.
Web Based Proxies
This is a web page with an area where you can type your desired URL, and you will connect to the site via the proxy server. This is a simple way to unblock sites at school and work. There are many problems with web based proxies though.
Many are blocked by school/work networks Those that are not blocked today, may be tomorrow You don’t know who the proxy admin is (security risk) You don’t always know what country the proxy is in The proxies may or may not encrypt your data The only change the IP of web based activity

Still, web based proxies are useful if you can find a reliable one (or source) because you don’t need to install anything. Though if you’re using your own Android and iPhone I would assume
Software Based Proxies
I don’t really see the point of software based proxies. The cheap or free runs run into the same security and quality issues as free web based proxies. The good, professional ones charge a price comparable to VPNs, but VPNs have better encryption and privacy features. Software based proxies are usually a bit cheaper, but not by much. For a month of service you can expect to pay 5-8 dollars, which is about the same as some discount priced VPN services.
Virtual Private Networks
The only real disadvantage of using a VPN is that you have to install it, so it may not be practical to use on work or school computers. But if you’re using your personal Android or iPhone, then it’s very handy to have installed. In fact, it’s a good idea to use a VPN if you’re using a personal device to connect to a work network because it will encrypt your data so your boss can’t monitor your activity on your personal phone. Remember, using your phone on a work network means your boss (or other network admin) can still monitor data you pass over the network.

Basically, VPNs for iPhone or Android can be divided into two categories: PPTP and L2TP. For fast connections to VPN servers PPTP will be your best choice. The trade off is that privacy and security features of PPTP are not as good as L2TP. For users looking for high security and privacy for their smartphone, then L2TP is a better choice. I don’t mean to give you the impression that it’s slow, but it does require more bandwidth, so slow internet connections plus L2TP VPN tunneling may result in a bit of lag.
Web Based VPNs
This is a new term that’s been thrown around a bit on the internet. Though this is not an official term, there is a service called SecuriTales that has a web based proxy that has some features of a VPN – thus some people call it a web based VPN. 256-bit data encryption and multiple ‘decoy’ sites means that you are able to use the no-installation features of a web based proxy but have the privacy of an encrypted VPN connection. In addition to this, you know that you’re sending your data through a professional service that respects your privacy. Though I don’t normally give specific names of services in my articles, SecuriTales is currently the only service which offers this type of proxy.
